Gachapon-inspired packaging
For this project, I collaborated with Chibi Pop Toys to create a subscription box inspired by the iconic gachapon machine. The challenge was to translate the rounded, detailed design of a gachapon machine into a rectangular box format, while keeping the fun and playful elements intact. The end goal was a vibrant, visually engaging packaging with a semi-transparent look that hints at the toy capsules inside.
Process:
Concept Development & Sketches
We began by discussing the priorities for the design. It was essential to keep the placement of key elements logical, including the coin slot, the drawer for capsules, and the machine's logo. Preliminary sketches helped us align on the overall direction before moving forward.3D Modeling & Testing
After initial sketches, I developed a 3D model of the box that adapted the look of the gachapon machine. This stage included creating renders and testing colors, transparency, and the appearance of capsules inside. I also worked on designing custom stickers and a coin token to personalize the packaging further.Material Creation & Refinement
During the shading and rendering phase, we experimented with different levels of transparency and texture to achieve the look of shiny plastic. This allowed the internal elements to show through subtly, just as they would in a real gachapon machine.Dieline Creation & Final Assembly
Once the final design was approved, I mapped it onto the dieline, ensuring the box would fold seamlessly into the desired form. Throughout the process, we made sure to tweak minor details like adjusting the size and position of elements on the box and making sure the capsules were filled with playful objects.Final Delivery & Printing
The final files were optimized for print, ensuring the printer had everything needed, including color-corrected PDFs and .tif files. The client was thrilled with the result, and the design was prepared for production.
